I am currently Deputy Director of the QUT Science Research Centre.

In my position as Professor of Statistics at University of Newcastle , I was Head of the Discipline of Statistics, with responsibility for five full-time staff, five conjoint lecturers, postdoctoral and research assistants, postgraduate research and coursework students and undergraduate programs. The following is a selection of my academic activities during that time:

  • appointment of conjoints from industry
  • student vacation programs, postgraduate industry projects
  • off-campus mode for postgraduate study through Graduate Diploma, Certificate and Masters programs
  • Stats Week, an annual series of one- and two-day commercial courses in applied statistics
  • s upervision of postgraduate students : Masters, PhD
  • membership of University committees: the School Executive, Faculty Board, University Research Management Committee, Faculty Promotions Committee, University Promotions Committee; Faculty Ethics; many selection panels
  • Chair, Program review Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Newcastle , 2003
  • new program in Bioinformatics within the Bachelor of Mathematics.
  • Co-director of Newstat Consulting for internal and external clients
  • strong local and international academic links with other disciplines (Computing Science and Public Health at QUT, and Environmental Science, Biostatistics and Engineering at University of Newcastle ) and institutions ( Auckland University , INSEE France, Duke University USA )
  • initiation of EMU NEST , a network of researchers involved in environmental modelling in QUT, CSIRO, EPA, DPI and DNR
  • coordination and lecturing of four to five courses (1 st year service through postgrad) each year
  • initiation of ASERC, a collaborative group with University of Wollongong and University of New England, to share teaching resources and higher level courses, and to promote workshops on teaching. This has led to an invitation to organise and co-edit a special JAMDS journal article on teaching statistics in higher education, with Prof. John Rayner.
  • active practice of reflective teaching through regular SET, SEU and SEPS surveys
  • active encouragement of quality teaching in our Statistics group, through peer review, training
  • member of o rganising committees for ASC14, ISBA98 and AMS2002; Program Chair for ASC16; Program committee for ISBA2004
