I am an active consultant within and outside the University. Current consultancies are undertaken through the TUNRA (The University of Newcastle Research Associates) division NewStat (Statistical and Quality Consultants) of which I am a co-Director.

Major external projects in the past three years in which I have been principal consultant include:

  • Port Waratah Coal Service and Freightcorp: data analysis and modelling
  • HLA Envirosciences Pty Ltd: data analysis and expert opinion
  • Hunter Valley Grammar School : parent survey
  • Education Queensland : development of a new index for disability funding
  • Clayton Utz Solicitors and Lawyers: expert opinion
  • Corrs Chambers Westgarth: expert review and opinion, short course on statistics
  • Ausmeat: sampling design
  • Health Insurance Commission: expert advice
  • Goro-Nickel: short course on reliability
  • Golden Casket: evaluation of a new game

As an indication, in a three month period under my coordination, NewStat brought in $85,000.

Within the University, the following activities have been established:

  • Funded statistical support for postgraduate research students
  • StatsLab, statistical consulting and support
  • Monthly seminar series
  • Stats Week, an annual series of one- and two-day short courses

As an indication, Stats Week 2003 returned over $10000.

Short courses developed and delivered in the last year include:

  • Bayes for Beginners (two days, Perth , December 2004)
  • Data Analysis for Transport (one day, Brisbane , November 2004)
  • Bayes for Beginners (one day, Brisbane , October 2004)
  • Bayesian Methods for Biometricians (two days, Canberra , June 2004)
  • Bayes for Beginners and Bayesian QTL analysis (four days, Armidale, Feb 2004)

Workshops and conference sessions organised (as part of a team) in the last year include:

  • Bayesian Topics in the Tropics (four days, ISBA/SSAI event, Stradbroke Island , Oct 2004)
  • Bayesian Analysis (2 sessions, SSAI/IBC conference, Cairns , July 2004)
  • ISBA 2004 (Program Committee , Chile , May 2004)
  • Expert Elicitation (one day, QUT, Mar 2004)
