What does the MAC offer?

QUTMAC on OLT

Students please note that Support Sessions start in Week 3.

For student use please go to QUTMAC on OLT.

What is the MAC?

The aim of the MAC is to improve access to ideas and achievement in mathematics and statistics for first year students at QUT. Physically the MAC is one room:

  • Room O507 - GP is our MAC workroom. The MAC workroom is open to students from 9 a.m - 6 p.m. Monday - Friday. Academic staff and tutors are available at various times to assist students having difficulties with any of the first year Maths units. At timetable will be available QUTMAC on OLT.

We run weekly Maths Support Sessions and workshops for students studying MAB100, MAB101, MAB105, MAB111, MAB112, MAB131, MAB132, MAB180.

The timetable for the Maths Support Sessions can be found on the QUTMAC on OLT.

What does the MAC offer?

Weekly Maths Support Sessions
These sessions are designed to help students with fundamental topics like algebra, trigonometry, differentiation, integration and other "assumed knowledge" topics. Instruction follows a systematic "back to basics" approach to help develop confidence and competence, and to address individual learning needs. These sessions are ideal for students who:

  • lack confidence with their mathematics
  • are returning to university after an extended period away from formal study
  • performed poorly in a pre-requisite unit
  • are repeating a unit

Exam Preparation Workshops
The workshops are to help students consolidate problem solving skills and examination technique before major assessment tasks and will usually be offered at least once a semester.

MAC Workroom (O507 - GP)
Students can use the MAC Workroom as a place for private study or groupwork, or to get:
help on specific problems from lecture notes or tutorial sheets
advice on study and examination preparation techniques
hints on assignments in some cases.

What do MAC programs cost?

MAC programs are currently subsidised through a special program called QUTMAC and are offered to students in the units MAB100, MAB101, MAB105, MAB111, MAB112, MAB131, MAB132 and MAB180 at no cost.

How do I know if I need the MAC?

Students could probably benefit from MAC assistance if:

  • they aren't following worked examples in lectures
  • they can't work through tutorial problems independently
  • they are having trouble understanding why they need to apply certain techniques in particular situations
  • they have performed below their best in a mid-semester exam or assignment

Students are most welcome to come and discuss their situation with Helen or Ross and advice on the best course of action.
